Next week another meeting of our art textile group TeXperanto. Time to take a look at the homework. Until know I only was busy with the new theme. Finishing the last one didn’t had any priority. I think the theme doesn’t have my interest any more. The new theme is the Dutch Golden Age (17th century). At first I did not see the good in this theme. My first thought was, “bleh, all those dark paintings”. Decided to google a bit around. I got change out of that! I can make something of that theme (maybe from any theme I guess). For the Netherlands this Golden Age was a period of growth and ‘we’ had a leading position in the world. The world at that time was charted by the Dutch. I always admired old maps (new ones as well). The most beautiful and famous atlas of all times, the atlas of Blaeu, was a product of the Dutch Golden Age. On the website of the archive of the city of Leiden you can leaf through the atlas. Incredible how detailed some parts of the world are represented.
I tried to make something out of this theme, I even made a mind map (sorry, it’s in Dutch).
My starting point was one of the maps from the atlas. One of the maps was my starting point. The one of Amsterdam, my city of birth. I always love to wander along the beautiful canals. I will zoom in on the map. I definitely use canal side houses. I experimented a bit with them. I machine embroidered on different materials. I like the lutradur and the felty under carpet the most.
